Some history on Poke Bowls
Poke bowls have been a delicious part of Hawaiian culture for centuries. The word “Poke” means “to slice” or “to cut” in Hawaiian. Originally, poke was enjoyed by Native Hawaiians as a simple dish made by fishermen. They’d slice fresh fish and season it with sea salt, seaweed, and crushed kukui nuts.
As poke bowls gained popularity in Hawaii, additional ingredients were added to enhance flavor and variety, such as soy sauce, sesame oil, green onions, and chili peppers. These additions complemented the freshness of the fish, creating a harmonious blend of tastes and textures cherished by locals and visitors alike. Over time, poke gained popularity beyond Hawaii’s shores.
In Japan, a similar dish called “sashimi salad” or “sashimi bowl” has been enjoyed for centuries, showcasing fresh fish slices served over rice or salad greens. While not identical to Hawaiian poke, the Japanese influence on seafood preparation has undoubtedly contributed to the popularity and evolution of poke bowls worldwide. Today, you can find poke bowls all around the world! From trendy restaurants in New York City to beachside cafes in Australia, poke has become a global sensation.
